About the Book

Beautiful
The Story Of Mabel

"It's My Life & I'll Cry If I Want To" is a powerful and raw collection of real-life stories that delve into the lives of seven individuals grappling with profound personal challenges and their journeys towards faith. Written by Gene McIntyre, this book is not a work of fiction; it presents authentic narratives with only names, places, and dates altered for privacy.

Chapters

I just watched another news clip on cult mom. She has gotten away with murder (literally) for all these years. She calls herself a believer and some sort of latter-day prophet and translated goddess – whatever that means. I think her current husband is her number four. No, I think her current husband is her number five. This last one is a doozy. He had some sort of ministry.

This is worse than having high blood pressure. This is worse than being unemployed. This is worse than having panic attacks without recognizing I had them. This is worse than huddling against the wall or crouching on the floor, hoping that the next explosion will not be in your home.

I remember the day like it was yesterday. The day my father died. My father, the preacher. The protector. The legalist. The authoritarian. My dad loved me. I am sure of it. He would not say it a lot, but I know he loved me in his own ultra-religious, ultra-conservative way.

I have been passed around repeatedly. From my mom to my dad, from my dad to my older siblings, and from my older siblings to friends’ couches. From home to church, to an orphanage, to foster care, to the streets, and back to church, only to end up in the back of a car with mostly 179 strangers so that I could find a resemblance of acceptance.

Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and
the thrill of creative effort.

Hold on to your values. What you find true, what you know is fair, and what you believe in are all values. The more you honor them, the better you will feel about yourself and those you love.

Accept the good. Look at your life and take stock of what’s working, and don’t push away something just because it isn’t perfect. When good things happen, even the very little ones, let them in.

Give Yourself a Chance to Breathe

You wake up at 5 or 6 am. Maybe you work out, grab your coffee, or drop the kids off at school. If you’re lucky, you manage a quick breakfast and get them to the bus stop on time. Then, you rush out of the house, trying to make it to work on time. You deal with your moody boss, trying your best to get the work done, all while hoping your kid doesn’t catch the latest virus going around at school. You’ve been told repeatedly that you’re not supposed to send a sick child to school, but when you have to go to work, what exactly can you do about a sick child? You leave the office, unsure if your significant other will be home. Things have been hectic, with little time for romance or anything that doesn’t involve talking about the kids or the growing pile of bills. You need to breathe, but there doesn’t seem to be enough time even for that. Church? No thanks. Who’s got time for that? God… the man upstairs… does He even care? I get it. God gets it. It’s your life, and it’s not easy. Sometimes, you feel like crying, but you hold it in. When you do cry and break down, you hide it. You’re afraid of looking weak, of disappointing others. “What’s wrong with me?” you ask yourself. Nothing. And everything. But you’re not alone. First off, I want you to know that I struggle too. If you come closer—this book will...
